Cyprus’ Presidential Commissioner calls for the international recognition of Armenian Genocide on its Remembrance Day, CNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 24/04/2021
Turkey continues to deny acknowledging the crime against the Armenian people, which was the precursor to the genocide of the Greeks of Pontus and Asia Minor, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou on April 24, Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. At the same time, Photiou calls for an international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.
The Commissioner says that the Armenian Genocide was the most horrible crime against humanity on behalf of Turkey. He adds that one and a half million Armenian Christians were massacred, exterminated in concentration camps, or lost their lives from the hardships of death marches in the desert.
It is added that the blatant violation of human rights and freedoms, the confiscation of property, the barbarity and terror and the humiliation of every aspect of human existence and dignity, continued to be part of the methods of the Young Turks in recent years.
"Cyprus is well aware of this, as well as Greece and other countries in the most recent years, in which we are witnessing a completely provocative and illegal violation of rights and universal principles and values by the Turkish leadership and its organs," continues the announcement.
It is also noted that in 1975, the Cypriot parliament was the first in all of Europe, to recognize and condemn in its resolution the Armenian Genocide, sending a message of appreciation and support to Armenians everywhere.
The Commissioner also calls for an international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide. As he says it is a request of the whole civilized world that knows from the course of history that when such crimes go unpunished, the guilty continue to pose a threat to humanity.
The Commissioner laid a wreath on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus at the Monument for the Armenian Genocide in the Armenian Diocese of Cyprus.
