ARCHIVE - 9 OCT 2020: One minute’s silence during House Plenary for those who defended the Republic of Cyprus, CNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 12/10/2020

A one minute’s silence was observed on Friday during the Plenary of the House of Representatives in memory of those who defended the Republic of Cyprus, with President of the House Demetris Syllouris reiterating the parliament’s determination to defend the principles and values provided for in UN Security Council resolutions.

Addressing the Plenary of the House, Syllouris said “we reaffirm our dedication to the principles of international law and the acquis communautaire, and strive for the restoration of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of our people, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins.”

He said that “a few days ago was the 60th anniversary of the declaration of independence of Cyprus, the result of the struggle of our people to be free of colonial rule.”

Syllouris noted that right from the beginning Ankara took advantage of elements of the constitution and the coup d’ etat, and set in motion its plans for division, invading the island in 1974.
He added that “the House of Representatives honours today all those who selflessly and heroically fought for the independence of our homeland.”
