Presidential Commissioner asks for Sweden’s contribution over missing persons, CNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 18/11/2019

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou briefed on Monday the Ambassador of Sweden Anders Hagelberg on efforts to determine the fate of missing persons in Cyprus, asking for Stockholm’s contribution.

During the meeting, Photiou referred to the problems caused by the Turkish stance regarding this humanitarian issue and pointed to the lower discovery rate of remains used for identifications, making the work of the Committee on Missing Persons more difficult, according to an announcement circulated by PIO.

The Presidential Commissioner asked for Sweden’s contribution, also through the EU, in order to exert pressure on Turkey to become more constructive in efforts to resolve this problem, it is added.

Ambassador Anders Hagelberg conveyed his country’s support to the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus in solving this issue and expressed Sweden’s readiness to contribute in this direction, the announcement concludes.
