Cyprus-Romania express willingness to deepen cooperation in Diaspora issues CNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 14/06/2021


Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou held on Monday a meeting with Deputy Minister of Diaspora of Romania, Oana Ursache.

According to a press release by the Presidency,  this was the fifth meeting held after the signing of the Bilateral Memorandum of Cooperation on Diaspora Issues in December 2018. It adds that the expansion of the cooperation between the two countries on diaspora issues contributes significantly to the enhancement of the relations between Cyprus and Romania.

In  statements after the meeting, Photiou said that the Republic of Cyprus supports the Romanian community in Cyprus and special care is given to issues of youth and education, adding that through the educational programmes in schools they learn their language and history, "thus keeping them close to their roots and culture".

He said that  they want to bring the people of the two countries, who either live abroad or in Cyprus and Romania,  closer through events that promote the history, culture, customs and traditions of the two countries.

Photiou said that they agreed on specific actions, especially in countries where the Diaspora of the two countries is organised, in order to promote their national interests.

The Presidential Commissioner briefed the Romanian official on the recent developments regarding the Cyprus issue and the efforts made by the President of the Republic of Cyprus to achieve a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, that will reunite the country and end the Turkish occupation based on the United Nations resolutions.

In her statements, Ursache said that in Cyprus there is a dynamic Diaspora community from Romania of around 45,000 people.

She added that `we attach special importance to the new generation and for this reason in the framework of the bilateral cooperation we will co-organise various actions and events in Cyprus and Romania as well as in other countries where we have organised Diaspora communities. "

Finally, the press release says that Photiou extended an invitation to the Romanian official to attend the World Conference of Cypriots of the Diaspora that will take place in Cyprus 3-6 of August.
