Cypriot Ambassadors and consular officers stationed overseas in a teleconference with Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou, on Thursday discussed issues concerning the coronavirus in relation to overseas Cypriots.
A Presidency statement said the teleconference was held with the participation of the ambassadors from the UK, US, Australia, Africa, Greece, Canada, France, Lebanon, the UAE and Egypt, in the presence of Director of the Foreign Ministry’s crisis management department, Demetris Hadjiargyrou.
The diplomats referred to the situation in the countries where they are stationed, especially the effort to support overseas Cypriots and the vulnerable groups as well as the elderly.
They also examined ways for the diaspora federations to cooperate with the Republic’s diplomatic missions during this difficult period to handle the problems and needs of overseas Cypriots.
Conveying the President of the Republic and the Foreign Minister’s appreciation for their efforts, Photiou also praised the missions for the help they provide to Cypriots stranded overseas and students during the coronavirus crisis.
The Ministry’s representative made special reference to the procedures that have been followed for the repatriation of Cypriots and the problems faced.
With deep regret, the statement said, "there was reference to the number of overseas Cypriots who passed away from coronavirus in the UK and the US.”
On their part, the Ambassadors stressed that in these difficult times, they are trying in every way possible to be close to the diaspora in cooperation with the relevant Federations. The goal is to solve and promote problems they face, the statement concluded.
