EXHUMATION OF REMAINS IN THE GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED AREAS AFTER REQUESTS BY THE FAMILIES CONCERNED

In the framework of the Government of Cyprus programme of exhumations and identification of remains, the Presidential Commissioner receives requests by Greek Cypriots as well as by Turkish Cypriot families for the location, exhumation and identification of the remains of their loved ones.  These cases are not included in the list of missing persons and had not either been submitted to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP).   The exhumations and the identification of the remains are carried out for purely humanitarian reasons. In their majority referred to cases of persons who lost their lives during the Turkish invasion and their families did not know where they were buried.

A number of exhumations took place in different areas under the control of the Republic of Cyprus, like in the villages of Xylophagou, Xylotympou, Argaka, Pedoulas etc.  For example, the Pedoulas excavations were carried out in the search to locate the remains of a young mother and her two children, who lost their lives during the fires that were caused by the bombing of the Turkish air force of the area of the village of Kampos.

The exhumations are carried out by Greek Cypriot scientists and the DNA analyses by the scientists of the Institute of Neurology and Genetics of Cyprus...PLEASE SEE BELOW THE PRESENTATION IN POWERPOINT.
