The Service for Missing Persons began its operation in its current form in November 1977. Previously, the Service for Humanitarian Affairs was responsible for dealing with all aspects of the missing persons and their families.
Initially, the Service for Missing Persons was under the auspices of the Office of the President of the Republic. From March 1978 until the end of 1985 it was transferred to the Ministry of the Presidency. Following the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 17/12/85 and the approval of the State Budget for 1986, the Service was transferred to the Ministry of Justice only to return once more to the Office of the President of the Republic in February 1993.
